Japanese tree lilac

Syringa reticulata
Planted June 2026

Japanese tree lilac is an attractive ornamental tree that flowers in May. It’s better suited to urban environments than shrub-form lilacs and is not susceptible to many diseases that plague those plants. This particular lilac also benefits from the protective watch of a border collie, a moose, a tapir, a pig, and several starfish. These figures likely deter pet owners from letting their dogs pee nearby; they also confer a protective spiritual energy of their own. It’s a well known fact that little efforts can lead to big things, and I have a good feeling about the survival of this tree.

“The Trees of Boerum Hill”

Melissa Guion

I water you, but never enough. I gather the garbage around you and give it to someone else. I admire you from below. I can’t scale you. Your scaffolding was removed to make room for Someone else’s scaffolding. I watch bugs eat you, I watch you eat metal fences. You’re my neighbors, at least as much as my neighbors are. I love you enough to try to explain it to someone else.
