Ginkgo & Japanese pagoda tree
A ginkgo and a Japanese pagoda tree walk into a tree pit…but seriously, folks.
It’s a classic NYC case of something that should never have happened. But not only did it happen, it’s recorded on the official NYC Tree Map; I have yet to find another such case. The ginkgo was there first, having been planted in the early 2000s. The fast-growing pagoda tree appeared on its own less than ten years ago, but has already matched the ginkgo for size.

Boerum Hill is expensive, and if you rent here, you have the right to share your space and expenses with another person. It’s important to know the rules that govern shared space in the event that your landlord disputes your rights. It’s also important to know what to do if and when you have a disagreement with a roommate over something like the use of resources. The Legal Aid Society points out that the city offers free mediation services for such disputes, but sadly for these two, there is no provision for problems between trees.
